Hi I’m Caroline
I’m energetic, encouraging and positive.
These are qualities I have drawn on in various stages of my life, and now want to use them to help you to find the balance, contentment and happiness in yours.
I have previously worked as a personal trainer and massage therapist, which was more than a job, it was a lifestyle I loved – supporting and encouraging people to achieve the changes they desired in their bodies. At the time I was an enthusiastic triathlete, competing at a variety of distances and relishing the supportive competitiveness that drew me to the sport in the first place.
Then, due to a major change in my life, I started a career in Banking. I fully embraced that change, as it was what my family needed at the time, and I worked hard to progress my career. But the long hours and the stress meant that I was no longer giving myself any time or attention and it started to take a toll on my body. I looked in the mirror and I didn’t recognise the person I saw. Despite my previous life working as a personal trainer I found myself reaching for quick fix solutions and got into a cycle of yo-yo dieting and intense periods of exercise that I didn’t consistently maintain. A story that will be familiar to so many people.
I had tried yoga on and off over the years, but due to my perceived lack of flexibility I always felt it was inaccessible to me. ‘I will never be as good as those yoga bunnies at the front of the class, so what’s the point’ kinda attitude.
Then something clicked. I recognised that yoga isn’t a competitive sport – it doesn’t matter that I can’t bend as far as other people, or tie my toes together behind my head. I recognised that yoga offers me so much more than just a physical workout. I recognised that my time on my mat was a really calming time, and as I created more space in my body I was able to free some space in my mind.
I have now been practising yoga, consistently, for more than 3 years, and gradually my flexibility and strength have increased, my understanding of, and connection to my body is much better than it ever has been, and I am calmer. I feel like me again.
But my journey doesn’t just end there.
A year or so ago, with a freer, clearer mind I recognised that I felt trapped in a career that I only did to support my family. It wasn’t all bad – the job I did helped me grow as a person. Managing large teams to deliver complex pieces of work to challenging deadlines gave me a different perspective on how to motivate people to achieve their goals. But it wasn’t what I wanted to find myself still doing in 10, or even 5 years time. With the support of my family I took a sabbatical to reflect on my choices. It was the most valuable and powerful 6 months of my life. I recognised that my heart really lay in working to help people achieve the health goals that they aspire to, which, along with starting a BSc in Nutritional Science, is what has led me to create The Garden Studio.
